After You Stop Smoking the Healing Begins

Have you recently given up cigarettes or are thinking of doing so? This is one of the best things you will ever do and a decision that can impact your health for life. Smoking causes many medical problems and is known to be dangerous, even deadly because it can cause fatal cancers. However, after you stop smoking, your body begins to heal from the ravages of cigarettes almost immediately. Knowing that positive changes are happening in your body can help keep you motivated.

Twenty minutes after quitting smoking, your heart rate and blood pressure goes down. And, the temperature of your feet and hands goes up. This is because oxygenated blood is more easily able to reach your extremities. If you can stick it out for eight hours, the oxygen level in your blood normalizes and so does the carbon monoxide level. After one day, your risk of heart attack due to smoking drops. And after only two days, your senses of taste and smell are more acute. In 72 hours, all the nicotine will be out of your body. That's only three days, and you can abstain for that long with enough determination.

Over the years, your lung tissue heals itself if you abstain from smoking. It is estimated that in 15 years a former smoker can have lungs similar to that of a lifelong non-smoker. There are other health benefits you will notice the longer you are cigarette free. You can walk further without coughing, exercise more, and you won't reek of stale smoke. Secondhand smoke is dangerous for those around you, so when you stop smoking you help boost the health of your whole family. Even if you smoke outside the particles hang on your clothes and may aggravate asthma, especially in children.

Not to say quitting is easy, often it's quite challenging. After stop smoking efforts begin, so does nicotine withdrawal. However there are medications, strategies and nicotine replacement therapy to help you maintain your quit. Also after you stop smoking you may want to consider a more alternative treatment like hypnotherapy or acupuncture which have both been proven effective for some smokers. No matter which method you choose to quit smoking, you will need to maintain your willpower to never pick up a cigarette again. Eventually, you will see that all your suffering during the worst of the withdrawal was worth it to be a non-smoker.
