Different Types of Stop Smoking Therapy
There are many different types of stop smoking therapy that you can use if you have decided to kick the habit once and for all. Like many smokers, you may have tried before and failed. The good news is, the more you try, the more likely you are to succeed. Learning about the different quitting strategies available and making use of those right for you can make a big difference in whether or not you are able to give up cigarettes for good. A good first stop is your doctor, to discuss various quitting methods.
One therapy to consider is prescription medication. There are currently two medications on the market widely used for smoking cessation. Chantix is one of those medications. It is a step by step medication program carried out over time. The full program is 12 weeks, however your doctor may prescribe a different Chantix regimen depending on your needs. The other medication for smoking cessation is Zyban, marketed under the name Wellbutrin as an antidepressant. Both Chantix and Zyban may help reduce the urge to smoke and decrease the severity of nicotine withdrawal.
A traditional treatment for quitting smoking is nicotine replacement therapy. This replaces your cigarette with a patch, gum or lozenge that contains nicotine. Over time, you learn not to depend on cigarettes for something to do with your hands. You break the smoking habit, then you slowly taper off your nicotine replacement therapy, or NRT. Some people like this method, others feel it is just substituting the nicotine in cigarettes for nicotine in another form and find it undesirable as a smoking cessation method. On the other hand, some smokers find nicotine replacement therapy quite helpful. It all depends on what kind of smoker you are, your body chemistry and your personal preferences.
One of the newest and most innovative types of stop smoking therapy is laser smoking cessation therapy. Although it sounds complicated, the idea behind laser smoking therapy is quite simple. The laser pulsates and is applied to specific acupuncture points. The stimulation received to these acupuncture points by the laser works to release natural chemicals called endorphins, which induce calm feelings of wellness and block nicotine cravings. A treatment with the laser takes about one hour, and quite a few people are able to kick the cigarette habit using this laser stop smoking therapy after only one session.
