What to Expect When You Quit Smoking
The choice to give up cigarettes is a big decision, but one that can save your life. If you've decided that you don't want to be enslaved by nicotine any longer, the first thing you should do is educate yourself about quit smoking cessation methods and both the positive and negative side effects you may experience. Nicotine is a highly addictive drug that makes your brain, and your body, behave as though it needs nicotine to survive. But the good news is that millions have won the war against cigarettes and you can, too.
First, get motivated by learning the positive changes that are going to happen. Only 20 minutes after your last cigarette, your pulse rate and blood pressure goes down. After about 8 hours or so, your blood oxygen level increases while the carbon monoxide in your blood decreases. After 24 hours you are less likely to suffer from cardiovascular disease due to smoking. And after two days, you can smell and taste better than you ever could when smoking.
You will notice your lungs are starting to heal themselves when you develop a cough and possibly a sore throat. It is your body expelling the toxins left behind by smoking, so this is a good thing even if it uncomfortable and will not last. Over the years, your lungs will grow stronger and stronger as they heal. Your oxygen capacity will increase, you will feel fitter and healthier, and you will start to realize how unpleasant smoking really is.
Of course, there are unpleasant symptoms associated with nicotine withdrawal, which may include but are not limited to: cravings, anger, irritability, headaches, trembling, anxiety, potential weight gain and more. These symptoms are temporary. The important thing is to find a way to cope with them as they arise rather than giving in and having a cigarette. Luckily there are many stop smoking cessation aids both over the counter and available by prescription.
These medications include Chantix and Zyban, two recent additions to the pharmaceutical world that may decrease cravings and minimize nicotine withdrawal. Some people choose nicotine replacement therapy, which include products like over the counter nicotine patches and nicotine gum. You may decide upon the cold turkey method, but if you go this route give yourself time to taper down to zero cigarettes per day and have healthy treats ready when cravings strike.
